​WHO IS TONY CIRIGLIANO?Tony Cirigliano is the co-owner of The Dental Lab and also oversees the Crown and Bridge Department of the laboratory. He has been in service as a Dental Technician for over 45 years and previously founded Broadway Dental, Inc in 1979 before being acquired by The Dental Lab. With many years of expertise, Tony frequently holds webinars with other Dental Professionals. In his recent webinar hosted by Zahn Academy, he paired up with Certified Dental Technician Susan van Kinsbergen to discuss DESS dental implants and their application with Trusana.  ​WHAT IS DESS?With business for over 50 years, DESS started out with headquarters in Barcelona, Spain, and now has locations all over the world. They offer a wide range of products and a full range of digital dentistry solutions to choose from that are compatible with many of the major implant companies around. Some products include scan bodies, pre-milled blanks, screws, Ti bases, analogs, abutments, and impression transfers. Most of their products are FDA-approved. ​SCAN BODIESDESS offers both Intraoral and traditional scanning. Their most recent design of implant scan body has no screw access hole on top, which dramatically improves the precision in the z-axis. No screwdriver is needed to attach the intraoral scan body and the reduced size makes it easy to use in the posterior as well as in other hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. The new design is made with antiglare white PEEK/titanium and titanium for its internal screw. DESS has developed this new product to meet demand and requests from around the world. The traditional implant scan body design was developed together with Exocad. The design allows for jobs to be performed on both engaging and non-engaging interfaces, including interfaces in single and multiple unit restorations. The company has designed it to ensure it is optimized for a wide range of optical scanners. In addition to scan bodies and scan flags, DESS provides all of the high bases you may be using for a digital case. Their library files include 3Shape, Exocad, and Dental Wings.  ​PRE-MILLED BLANKS AND BLANK HOLDERSDESS’s pre-milled blanks have 32 compatibilities and come in 10 and 14-millimeter (mm) titanium and 14 mm cobalt chrome. They offer the longest millable length on the market at 20 mm, and minimal gingival transitional height at 0.3 mm, allowing the maximum degree of design freedom. The proprietary blank holder is specifically designed to suit Imes-Icore, VHF, ZirkonZahn, Yendent, and any 98mm mills. They offer a quick “screw-on” system where the blank is pre-attached to a sub-holder before being placed in the mill. The pull-down and lock-holding systems ensure maximum precision and stability during the milling process. Pre-milled socket positions and sub-holders are laser-identified to better ensure what is where. DESS SCREWSDESS Screws for definitive use are made from medical grade 5 ELI Titanium Integrity and soundness are guaranteed by stress tests of up to 150% of their nominal torques. They are designed to ensure a perfect fit with both the standard accessories as well as with special Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems for structures, bridges, and custom abutments. Some are available in Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated version, in which the screw is coated with a hard carbon layer. The carbon layer is to provide a low friction surface finish improving the pre-load of the screw and producing a high clamping force between the dental abutment and the implant. DESS has developed many special screw designs, including ones of longer versions, different socket versions, and heads with flat contact faces to improve the structures passivity and fitting. Again, they are interchangeable with all major manufacturers.  ​PURE SWITCHPure Switch is a unique product for their company. The concept of this product is that it can be used to replace the original abutment seamlessly, providing the customer with a lot of flexibility. Both the original product and the DESS product can be used without the loss of any features. DESS guarantees that its products are manufactured to be 100% compatible with the original implant. The Pure Switch is interchangeable with the original branded version and has the same footprint as the original screwdriver tip. As for configuration, it has the identical seat angle, diameter, and length as the original as well. However, there is no compromise on fit or quality and all DESS products are tested, guaranteeing their performance. DESS ​TI BASEDESS has four different Ti Bases available for their clients: ANGLEBase, C-Base, ELLIPTIBase, and Straight. They are each sandblasted in the DESS facilities before being shipped, increasing the bond up to 200%. In addition, they are collar-machined to achieve the desired smooth connection at the implant occlusal angle. The measurements and design ensure a stable union and have SelectGrip® for the best retention to the dental crown. DESS ANGLEBases and Straight Ti Bases are FDA approved  PRODUCTS COMPATIBILITIES AND SHAFT HEIGHTSThe ANGLEBase has a shaft height of 3 mm to allow access to be done from multiple angles. You essentially have access from a 360-degree direction. The C-Base measures 4.68 mm and has vertical walls for maximum bond retention. This is a special product for Cerec® users. The ELLIPTIBase is 3 mm and has a slightly oval shape that is meant for tight incisor spaces. It is more narrow with buccal and lingual sides to it. It is used for special situations and is unique to their product line. Lastly, the Straight Ti Base has a shaft height of 4.2 mm. These Ti bases all you to see surface treatment on it. In engaging and non-engaging connections for implant level and on top of multi-unit implants, Straight Ti Bases are available for over 25 implant systems. ​WHY DESS?DESS is the chosen partner for Myerson’s Trusana material for digital dentures.
