Interview with an Experienced Dental Tech: Norman Roth

​“You’re only as good as your last crown,” a phrase often spoken by our experienced dental technician and technical sales representative, Norman Roth. At The Dental Lab, we have seen many great dental technicians come and go, and in the New Year, our dear friend Norm will be entering retirement. Ahead of his upcoming retirement, Norm has taken the time to interview and provide valuable insight and advice he leaves with us.

What was your role at The Dental Lab?
I worked alongside our current Chief Executive Officer and lab owner, Jay Collins, as a dental technician for the crown and bridge department and implants department. I slowly migrated to case planning implant surgical guides and troubleshooting. In my final position at The Dental Lab, I became a technical representative for the sales team, while continuing my duties on the bench when necessary. 

How long have you worked in the dental laboratory industry?
44 years at Philadelphia Denture, Collins Dental Lab, Campos Dental Lab, Colonial Dental Laboratory, Inc, and lastly The Dental Lab.

What dental technician degrees do you currently hold?
I obtained a certification from Mastbaum Area Vocational/Technical School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1978.

What departments have you worked in?
I have worked in all areas, but mainly crown and bridge and implants. 

What skills have you acquired over your work history?
Over the many years in the industry, I have learned to become a full-function technician with a specialization in case planning and implants.

What have been the most significant changes in work culture since you started?
The biggest change has been dental CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing). It has come a long way from analog or hands-on fabrication. I recently attended an iTero certification course–It was great. What a future.

What were the greatest successes or accomplishments in your working history?
I like to think my success is owed to my consistency. I strive to help dentists, which in turn helps patients. I always thought, “Patients first.”

​"After 40-plus years at the bench and on the phone, it is time to throw in the spatula. I had many great relationships. I like to think I helped many doctors–most of them dentists. It has been a great run. I’d like to thank all my team members over the years."
